The state of influencer marketing in 5 charts
Despite the hype, funding for influencer-marketing tech is light this year.
Influencer marketing is, after all, essentially relationship based, and it doesn’t require sophisticated technology like programmatic, so it could be a hard sell for VCs. Mia Dand, CEO for Lighthouse 3, also thinks that VC funding has been thinner overall this year compared to last year and influencer tech space is “an unstructured mess” right now.

Social media ‘influencers’: A marketing experiment grows into a mini-economy
What was an experimental marketing practice only a short time ago has
morphed into a mini-economy with dizzying financial stakes. The
social-media analytics firm Captiv8 estimates that big brands are
spending a collective $255 million per month for sponsored posts on
Instagram alone. Captiv8 says Instagram influencers who have more than
7 million followers command an average rate of more than $150,000 per
sponsored post.

Influencers go to greater and greater lengths to make sure their feeds feature only the most polished aspirational imagery. For
Middledorf, that means studying Pinterest for fresh posing ideas. She
has honed tricks such as walking backward, a tactic she swears actually
appears as a more natural walk in photos. And she scouts locations ahead
of time to make sure the scenery is a fitting background for a certain
outfit.

UK influencers flout disclosure rules on branded posts
Influencer marketing is winning a bigger slice of brands’ budgets. But
on Instagram, it’s not always obvious what’s an ad, because so many
popular Instagrammers are simply not labeling them as such.
--
A brand or an influencer might justify not disclosing an ad as a way
of avoiding punishment by platform algorithms, which limit the reach of
content that’s labelled as sponsored. (Others use tricks like watermarks
within videos to avoid this.) But in the long run, it’s in the interest
of both brands and influencers to disclose the arrangement, experts
say.

Influential, ReadPulse, TapInfluence, Social Bluebook, Cirqle, NextBee
and FindYourInfluence.com.

Ted Murphy, CEO of the social influencer firm IZEA, estimates that there
are over 200 companies in this social influencer tech platform sector.
His company has been exploring potential acquisitions, but has found few
firms with any real ability to execute on what they promise.
--
“Few of these startups have anything real under the hood. A lot of these
places are just scraping data [and listing all the same influencers]
and haven’t actually signed anybody up.”
Introducing the “Influencer Marketing Technology Landscape”
San Francisco-based Lighthouse3, a
market research and strategy consulting firm, is among the first to
attempt to demystify this influencer martech space with their
comprehensive report, “The CMO’s Guide to Influencer Marketing Technology”.
With over 133 vendors across five categories, influencer marketing is a
highly fragmented industry. There is no one-solution-fits-all.
An Advocate has a positive sentiment towards your brand, whereas an Influencer
may have a negative, neutral or positive view. Advocates are not
typically compensated, although they may receive perks like new product
trials or coupons.

How online 'influencers' are changing the food industry
"With social media and technology flooding the internet with over 200
million pieces of content a minute, it's essential that brands find a
way to break through the noise," says Kirsty Sharman from online
marketing agency, Webfluential.
--
"In 2015, Google actually classified the search phrase 'influencer
marketing' as a breakout trend - which means it experienced growth of
over 5,000%."
--
"One of the great things about influencer marketing is that brands
producing global messaging can work with local influencers, in different
markets, to localise the content and share the message in a way that's
unique to each country."

The rise of 'micro-influencers' on Instagram
There’s such a thing as being too popular.
It turns out that once a social media influencer reaches a critical mass of followers, audience engagement actually begins to decrease. A survey of 2 million social media influencers by tech company Markerly showed that for unpaid posts, Instagram influencers with fewer than 1,000 followers have a like rate of about 8 percent, while those with 1,000 to 10,000 followers have a like rate of 4 percent.
As following base continues to increase, like rate keeps decreasing. Instagram influencers with 10,000 to 100,000 followers see a 2.4 percent like rate, compared to 1.7 percent for those with 1 million to 10 million followers and more. Comment rate follows a similar pattern.
--
The findings apply to sponsored Instagram posts, too, which suggests the sweet spot for maximum impact is an influencer with a following in the 10,000 to 100,000 range. Call them “micro-influencers.”
