The fusion of native and programmatic advertising is finally underway - BI Intelligence report

Many advertisers and publishers hope to meld native-ad units with programmatic buying tools, and this may finally be possible thanks to a new specification from the Interactive Advertising Bureau.
The IAB's OpenRTB 2.3 spec could underpin a programmatic-native ecosystem if it’s adopted in the ad-tech world.
In simplistic terms, the key to the new spec is the ability to serve up sponsored content that matches the look and feel of a publisher site in real time through automated processes.

Respect The Media Platform in Native Advertising

One of the key factors is that it should have the same tone and attitude as the editorial content on the media platform. So in order to succeed with your native advertising you need to thoroughly understand the platform you’re buying ad space on.

One of the reasons why native ads works best when crafted by journalists or copywriters is that they know how to tell a story from the audience point of view. And journalists in particular are used to adapting their writing to the style of the platform. This advice is useful in content marketing as well, but vital in native.

LinkedIn now gets 45 percent of its ad revenue from native ads

With more than 110 million multiplatform unique visitors in June, up 46 percent year-over-year (comScore), LinkedIn still makes most of its money from selling recruiters access to job candidates. But it’s been building out its ad business, which now accounts for 20 percent of company revenue. Two years ago, it introduced Sponsored Updates, a native ad-like unit that lets companies like Microsoft Office and Holiday Inn Express pay to push their content into the feeds of their target audience.
Sponsored Updates has become its fastest-growing ad product, accounting for $63 million, or 45 percent of its ad revenue, in the second quarter of this year.

Comparing the ROI of Content Marketing and Native Advertising

In the early days of content marketing, widgets, and “listicles” dominated the landscape. As Google began penalizing brands for thin content pages and low-value link schemes, the industry scrambled to produce higher-quality content. Thus, like some publishers, content marketing agencies started to produce more articles and infographics than other content formats.
