Adtech isn’t in trouble — it’s just misunderstood

There was a flurry of adtech IPOs in 2013 and early 2014, as private companies took advantage of investor appetite for the fast-growing adtech sector.
--
While they were represented as being Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) businesses, their revenue models were actually transactional and tied to media spend. This doesn’t have the stickiness and revenue visibility of SaaS. A re-rating of the sector was inevitable as companies missed growth targets and investors became better versed in how the market actually operates.
--
One of the unique features of the adtech market is the sheer number of companies for whom advertising technology is strategically relevant.  Not many businesses across the breadth of the (cash rich) technology, media, and telecom universe can ignore the disruption that’s occurring in advertising and marketing. For some, such as the enterprise software vendors, it presents an opportunity to integrate additional revenue streams. Conversely for traditional media players, notably publishers and broadcasters, it offers a defensive mechanism to protect those revenues. Other interested parties include telcos, traditional data groups, social networks, and other diversified Internet groups, and consultants, not to mention the pure-play adtech and martech consolidators themselves. An increasingly competitive market coupled with a frenetic rate of innovation suggests adtech M&A will remain buoyant.
--
The other critical factor in the ongoing strategic interest in this sector is the shift in momentum from adtech to martech.
--
The public markets now make a clear distinction between each segment.  While definitions vary, the market generally thinks of adtech as technology designed to streamline the buying and selling of digital ad inventory, where the revenue model is tied to media spend or other performance-based metrics. By contrast, martech is software sold on a subscription basis to facilitate and optimise the broader marketing function. For investors, the subscription-based revenue model is generally most attractive because it provides greater revenue visibility and (potentially) stickiness. In reality the picture is more blurred, but this shift has also become apparent in the private market, and many of the very high multiple deals in 2015 were in the martech segment.
--
In reality the sectors are (slowly) converging.

--
“Every digital advertising platform has its own unique dashboard with unique metrics,”
--
Saunders said 200 companies are participating in the private beta, while another 700 remain on the waiting list.
Saunders and Pratt said they intend to make the platform generally available in the first quarter of 2016.

Marketing Technology Landscape Supergraphic (2015) - January 12, 2015

The 2015 edition of my marketing technology landscape supergraphic has been released, now with 1,876 vendors represented across 43 categories.
--
First, new categories keep emerging, often as rebellious offshoots from previous categories. For example, I charted “Influencer Marketing” separate from “Social Media Marketing” this year, because of the momentum of so many companies using that label.
And fourth, many innovative products have an architecture or a value proposition that inherently spans multiple categories.
--
However, one of the big trends in marketing technology has been the emergence of a set of “marketing clouds” that incorporate many capabilities from across this landscape under the umbrella of a single vendor.
 --
There’s a growing cluster of marketing middleware companies on this landscape — which includes five more specific categories: Data Management Platforms/Customer Data Platforms, Tag Management, Cloud Integration/ESBs, Identity, and APIs — that are advancing rapidly.
--
What if 1,000+ marketing technology vendors were the new normal?
The fact that this isn’t limited to martech — we’re seeing a similar expansion of companies in fintech, legal tech, HR tech, etc. — suggests that this is possibly just the new state of software. In a digital world, more and more companies produce software as a part of their business.
--
After all, this is a huge market. IDC predicts that the worldwide spend for marketing software in 2015 will be $22.6 billion.

Why Time Inc. invested in visual search engine Snap Fashion

Snap Fashion is a London-based website and series of apps designed to let people upload images of clothing items. Its software then mines a database of more than 250 retailers to find a store that has the item.
Time joins a line of other publishers including Gawker, Condé Nast and — perhaps the biggest success story in this area — the Daily Mail with Femail Fashion Finder, which lets readers buy clothes and accessories inspired by their favorite celebrities’ outfits was rolled out in the U.S earlier this year. It has reportedly driven £800,000 ($1.2 million) in monthly sales directly to retailers, with the Mail taking a small commission from each sale.
