Köpknappar på sociala medier har hittills varit något av en flopp

Christmas shopping by numbers

As the value of what we spend online goes up, so do the number of orders and parcels. And all this shopping is heavily skewed towards the Christmas shopping season, with almost one in four of the year's online orders being placed in November and December.

One result of this is that there are more delivery vans than ever before on UK roads.
The number of miles driven by vans and light trucks has soared by 70.4% over the past 20 years, according to the Department of Transport; far outstripping the growth in cars and heavy goods vehicles - up 14% and 2.9% since 1995, respectively.

The state of the department store business. As you can see, sales have only declined since the early 2000s, which coincided with the advent of online retail.

Video becomes the main ad-blocking battleground for publishers

“We do allow video ads only if they are user-initiated. Users need to actively start the video ad,” said Till Faida, CEO of Eyeo GmbH, the company that developed Adblock Plus. “Pre-roll video ads currently aren’t part of acceptable ads because our research has shown that those are perceived as annoying by many users.”

Pinterest Can Be a Great Traffic Source If You Sell the Right Stuff

Wall Street Journal today reports that some e-commerce sites really benefit from Pinterest and its social network of Pins.
The furniture retailer Dot & Bo reports that 73 percent of their social traffic comes from Pinterest. The wedding retailer Kleinfeld Bridal almost 68 percent and diamond seller Zales reports 30 percent.
--
Consider that overall, among the top 10,000 retailers in the U.S., social media accounted for just 4% of their total traffic during the period in question, according to SimilarWeb.

Placester closes another round of funding

Boston-based Placester, a marketing platform for real estate agents, said Tuesday it has raised $27 million in Series C funding, just seven months after the Series B round of $15 million.
--
Placester sells software that helps real estate agents build websites that include homes on the market and stay on top of customer leads, with prices ranging from $10 to $300 per month. Placester also helps customers run Google AdWords campaigns, optimize their websites for search engines, promote their businesses on Facebook, and ramp up their online marketing materials.
--
About 20 percent of the 1.2 million real estate agents in the US now use Placester’s platform, Barba said. This growth since the company launched in 2011 is due in part to inking national franchise contracts earlier this year with Keller Williams and Canadian brokerage firm RE/MAX Integra.

VC Firm Predicts Marketing Technology Investments Will Climb To $120 Billion Over Next 10 Years

February 26, 2015

Foundation Capital partner Ashu Garg says CMOs will spend 10 times the current $12 billion they invest in martech and software.

According to Garg, only one percent of marketing budgets currently go to software/tech investments. He forecasts this amount to increase substantially over the next decade as the role of the CMO transitions into what Garg defines as the “CeO” or Chief Experience Officer, “owning the end-to-end customer experience.”

Up against the paywall

American dailies lost around $30 billion in ad spending between 2005 and 2014, or 60% of the total. Each drop in revenues is being met, in most cases, with a fresh cull of newsroom staff.

A typical American personal-computer user spends just 228 seconds on each visit to a news website.
--
The digital-advertising revenue of America’s daily papers was $3.5 billion in 2014, just 11% more than in 2007, according to the Pew Research Centre and the Newspaper Association of America. Analysts reckon that just two digital-media firms, BuzzFeed and Huffington Post, will grab around 10% of those revenues this year.

It’s the real thing

“Authenticity” is being peddled as a cure for drooping brands

BUSINESSES have always told stories about their products. But in recent years they have become particularly verbose, bombarding consumers with any small detail that might enhance the brand.
--
Brands began as badges of product quality, going back at least as far as the medieval guilds of craftsmen who used them to distinguish their work. In the modern age they have sought to convey emotional and social values, too: think of Nike’s “Just do it”, or Kodak’s “Share moments. Share life”. Now, in inundating consumers with a cascade of fascinating facts, companies are striving to bestow “authenticity” on their brands. Interbrand, a consultant on branding, describes authenticity as “an internal truth and capability”, a “defined heritage” and a “well-grounded value set”. This slippery quality, the pundits tell firms, is what the public is yearning for, in an age of doubt and mistrust.
--
For a range of consumer goods, brands’ strength as a signal of quality, and their power to open people’s wallets, are fading, argue Itamar Simonson and Emanuel Rosen in their book, “Absolute Value: What Really Influences Customers in the Age of (Nearly) Perfect Information”.

Of the top 100 consumer packaged-goods brands in America, 90 lost market share in the year to July, according to Catalina, a marketing firm. In China and other big emerging markets, foreign-branded goods are losing their allure, as shoppers realise that local products are no longer so inferior.
--
The consulting firms that value and rank brands, such as Interbrand and Millward Brown, report that their top 100 names are still increasing in value. However, such firms have different and quite subjective methodologies, and often disagree on what any given brand is worth. Christof Binder of Trademark Comparables, an adviser on brand values, and Dominique Hanssens of the University of California, Los Angeles, sought a more concrete measure: when brands are sold as part of corporate takeovers, what price do investors put on them? They found that these prices, as a percentage of deals’ total value, have dropped since 2003. So, at least for those firms being taken over, the strength of their brands is becoming a smaller share of their overall worth.

Ex-Googlers raise $1.4M to launch AdHawk ad campaign management platform

A couple of ex-Google AdWords guys, Todd Saunders and Dan Pratt, have launched a software platform called AdHawk.
--

The new startup gives marketers a central dashboard where they can manage all their various platform ad buys, like from AdWords or Facebook.
--
“Every digital advertising platform has its own unique dashboard with unique metrics,”
--
Saunders said 200 companies are participating in the private beta, while another 700 remain on the waiting list.
Saunders and Pratt said they intend to make the platform generally available in the first quarter of 2016.
