The retail sector employs about 3 million people – but of the 270,000
shops in the UK, up to 74,000 could shut. Nearly 30% of these could be
in Wales and the north of England, the report says.
Many high streets across the country have not fully recovered from
the aftermath of the 2008 financial crash, when shop closures
accelerated dramatically and chains including Woolworths, Zavvi and MFI
disappeared.
